Why Waiting Is Pleasurable

taken by Mr.Domdom

Life is short. This is why we hate waiting. We think it is wasted time. We think that with this time we could do something more useful. In fact your capacity to wait is equal with your capacity to be alone with yourself. Because this is what it comes down to. The time you are given is a gift and either you use it to gain peace over your mind or you use it to distract yourself from your own thoughts. Or to be all Alanis Morissette: "Why are you so petrified of silence? Here, can you handle this? .... Did you think about your bills, your ex, your deadlines or when you think you´re gonna die? Or did you long for the next distraction?" Waiting puts you on hold.

You have to make use of this time. Breathe. Look around. You are part of this moment on this planet and nobody ever can bring it back to you. We have a saying here in Austria that goes: "So jung kommen wir nimma zam." meaning something like "We will never meet this young again." Embrace this very moment, it´s the only thing you´ve got. Don´t run away from it and hide within distraction. This often happens to me when I am close to an energy burnout. I just can´t stop obsessing about work. Sometimes in an unhealthy way and this is when I really do enjoy waiting.

I like the sound of footsteps. Ballerinas on the ground.

When you wait, that is actually the time when nobody wants anything from you. You are already occupied with waiting. See it like this way: You can either wait until the train arrives at the place where you need to get off or you could simply enjoy the ride.

Sometimes waiting is the only time you get to enjoy with yourself at all. Your mind might be spinning around, but remember: your soul is always at rest.

5 things I am thankful for today:
  • the jasmine tea we get at our favorite chinese foods restaurant is sooo delicious
  • taking a hot shower in the morning
  • dreaming that I wore a fuzzy pink pullover. Somewhat disappointed that I don´t own it in real life. :(
  • Vanilla Diamond is growing to be little purring cuddle monster.
  • Futo Maki. I adore big avocado rolls.

  1. What a great post! I am so busy all the time, and probably need not be, and can feel that people constantly want something from me. I like the idea of just waiting around and not trying to fill every inch of time with something. It's nice to just daydream sometimes and feel a disconnection to the busyness and replace it with a connection to yourself. We need more of that! x

  4. Mrs Balfour, I totally hear you! I love how you describe it as a disconnection to busyness. Because that is what we mostly are connected with, but aren´t really aware of it until it reaches a certain level. That´s pretty weird, huh? :)

Joyce, oh you make me blush! It´s funny how we often forget to take photos of ourselves. I just recently realized that one hardly gets to see me on my own blog (contrary to Elsie of A Beautiful Mess or Kaylah of The Dainty Squid...but seeing photos with them on is why I love their blog, it´s part of sharing themselves. And I didn´t do that on my own blog on a sufficient level. Gotta change that!!) Many hugs to you!!!

  6. I have to agree with you as well. As a Virgo, I'm early for everything and have learned to appreciate that quiet time. I don't pick up magazines in the doctor's office or read on the bus, I just wait...and enjoy the time to myself.

  7. Oooh, Lorinda, I see you are into astrology? I´m curious about that! I think I need to learn more about my sagittarius-ness. :D It´s good that you know what you need and want for yourself.
